The biggest challenge with quadcopters is their huge appetite for power. Larger batteries mean more weight and don’t always provide the flight times that pilots are demanding. The future may not lie with bigger batteries, but instead with wireless power. Electrical engineering researcher Dr. Samer Aldhaher recently posted a video demonstrating how a drone can fly for long periods of time without using a battery! Long-range wireless power transmission is possible because of a few different technological approaches, including focused electromagnetic fields and lasers. Today, the limiting factor is distance. But as researcher continues, scientists expect to be able to increase distances using power from the sun.
